2020 Community Impact Year In Review

Neighborhood Heroes Program

heroescollage.png

The San Jose Earthquakes created the Neighborhood Heroes program in response to COVID-19. Each week, a community hero was chosen and written about, and a donation was made in their honor to a local cause assisting in COVID relief.

I have worked as the single beat writer for this program, interviewing and writing about community members each week. Quakes partner Wells Fargo announced their support in April, giving $10,000 to the Quakes Foundation to see the program through until the end of 2020.

Below are all the 36 published articles I have written since the program's inception in late March 2020.

JUNIOR GIANTS PROGRAM

2018 - Ambassador / Intern

In 2018, I interned with the San Francisco Giants through their Junior Giants program. Junior Giants is the flagship philanthropic program of the Giants Community Fund. The Junior Giants Ambassador role placed me in charge of planning and facilitating a free, coed, 8-week summer baseball program in my town of Half Moon Bay.

In this role, I wore many different hats. I planned how to facilitate the Junior Giants curriculum into league play. This curriculum differentiated the Junior Giants program from any other professional teams' philanthropic children's programs by emphasizing educational components into the fabric of the league in addition to playing baseball.
I held two public training meetings for all parents and volunteer coaches before the season began to make sure everyone understood the mission of the program-- that baseball is a fun catalyst to learn and reinforced Junior Giants values in other aspects of life.

2019 - Half Moon Bay League Commissioner

In 2019, I returned as the Commissioner of the Half Moon Bay Junior Giants. In this role, I was employed by the San Mateo County Sherriff's Department, as they were the community liaison for the league. I was in charge of overseeing the entire operation of the Junior Giants program, and the promotion meant that I also had an Ambassador as my intern, just as I was the year prior. After the completion of the season, the Half Moon Bay Junior Giants got recognized in the local paper twice for a successful season and the special honor of one of our players.
